Enam and Katia discuss how divorce rates differ across their nations.

Katia: So Enam, while we discuss arranged marriages, how frequently do arranged marriages result in divorce? Is the rate high?

Enam: In reality, the divorce rate is quite low – actually under ten percent, and although it's gradually increasing, it still remains quite low. I think the reason lies in Bangladeshi culture. In that society, boys and girls are raised differently and have limited contact with one another before marriage. When a couple becomes married, they begin to truly know their partner better through their opposite perspectives, which helps them build mutual respect. Both partners make an effort to appreciate each other's worldviews and principles. Since the cultural norm expects marriage to be lifelong and permanent, they both invest in making their relationship work.

Does your country experience higher divorce rates?

Katia: Regrettably, yes, the rate is rising. I don't have exact figures, but during my childhood, if one of my friends' parents were to separate, it would have been quite unusual and shocking. Nowadays, many of my friends either are experiencing separation themselves or had parents who did, so something once uncommon has become increasingly frequent in Mexico.

Enam: In your opinion, what is driving this rise in divorce? What might explain this change?

Katia: It's difficult to state with certainty, but I believe multiple factors are involved. Previously, women typically remained home to care for the household, their husbands, and their children, but nowadays women have gained independence and the ability to make their own decisions. This shift in women's autonomy has transformed society, and likewise, views regarding marriage and separation have also evolved. I would say these two elements are probably the main reasons.
