Commonly Confused Words

Reči koje se slično izgovaraju često mogu da zadaju glavobolju mnogima. Izdvojili smo primere koji vas mogu zbuniti.

 

  •  
    EXCEPT – to take or leave out (osim): Do all the exercises except the last one.
  •  
    ADD – (glagol, dodati, sabrati): If you add this ingredient, it will taste much better.
  •  
    ADVISE – a verb, to suggest/recommend something (savetovati): My friend advised me to be persistent in order to accomplish my goals.
  •  
    AVERSE – to express strong opposition to something/to strongly dislike (protiviti se nečemu, imati averziju prema nečemu): He was not averse to the idea of taking initiative and working under pressure.
  •  
    EFFECT – n., result, v., to accomplish: We achieved the effect of looking nasty. Can they effect such a change without disrupting the business?
  •  
    ISLE – an island (ostrvo): Isle of Man is an island located in the Irish sea.
  •  
    ILLUSION – a false perception of reality (iluzija): She is not the girl he loves. He fell in love with an illusion.
  •  
    ALREADY – by this time: The cake was already ruined when the children came.
  •  
    ALTAR – a sacred table in a church (oltar).
  •  
    ALL TOGETHER – gathered, with everything in one place (sve zajedno): We were all together at the concert last night.
  •  
    A PART – to be joined with (deo): This survey is a part of the current research.
  •  
    ASSENT – agreement (sporazum): They  assented to the new rules of the game.

 

  •  
    BREATHE – verb, to inhale or exhale (glagol, disati): You must  breathe deeply if you want to feel better.
  •  
    BY – (kraj, pored): Sandra drove by Peter’s house.
    BYE – (ćao, zdravo): See you next time! Bye!

    SIGHT – vision (vid, vizija): The sight of his pictures evoke negative feelings in me.
    SITE – position or place (mesto): The new shopping mall was built on the site of a park.
  •  
    COMPLIMENT – noun, praise; verb, to praise (dati kompliment): Tina complimented Ana on her clothes.
  •  
    CONSCIOUS – awake  (budan, svestan): I was conscious when they entered the flat.
  •  
    COUNSEL – to advise (savetovati): They counseled the parents before their child was sent home.

    DESSERT – (desert): I think I will order dessert.

 

  •  
    ILLICIT – illegal (nezakonit): His illicit activities lead him to prison.
  •  
    IMMINENT – ready to take place (predstojeće, blisko): Arguing is imminent from the moment she enters the room.

 

  •  
    FOUR – (četiri): There are four chairs in that room.

 

  •  
    HERE – (ovde, tu): They will put the new  furniture here.

 

  •  
    IT’S – contraction for it is (kraći oblik forme IT IS): It’s a wonderful morning.

 

  •  
    NOW – (sada): I am finishing my homework now.

 

  •  
    LED – verb, past tense of the verb “to lead” (glagol, prošli oblik glagola “to lead”): She led her enemies into a trap.
  •  
    LAY – to lay an object down. (položiti, ima objekat): Our teacher lays stress on grammar. The town lay at the foot of the mountain.
  •  
    LOOSE – noun, to not be tight; verb (rarely used) to release: The burglar’s pants were so loose that he was sure to lose the race with the cop chasing him. While awaiting trial, he was never set loose from jail because no one would post his bail.

    MOMENTOUS – very important because of having an effect on future events: This is a momentous occasion.

 

  •  
    KNEW – (prošli oblik glagola know-znati): We knew all these words a year ago.

 

  • PASSED – verb, past tense of “to pass”, to have moved (prošlo vreme glagola proći): The parade passed through the city quickly, but it left an impression.
    PAST – belonging to a former time or place (prethodni, pored): Who was the past president of the company? Go past the hospital and turn left.

    PROCEED – to go forward (nastaviti, produžiti): He proceeded down the corridor when he saw her.
  •  
    PRINCIPLE – a general or fundamental truth (princip): The research is based on the principle of relativity.

    QUOTATION – noun, the act of citing (citirati): The book of famous quotations was very useful.

 

  •  
    STATIONERY – writing paper (kancelarijiski pribor): Maria took the stationery from the other office.
  • SUPPOSED TO – correct form for “to be obligated to” or “presumed to” NOT “suppose to” (trebalo bi): When is our train supposed to arrive?
    SUPPOSE – to guess or make a conjecture (pretpostaviti): Do you suppose we will have a good repletion there?

    THEN – at that time, or next (tada, onda): I washed my clothes and then I went to see my friend.
  •  
    THERE – indicates location, hint: think of “here and there” (odnosi se na lokaciju, tamo): There is the box I told you about.
    THEY’RE – contraction for “they are” (skraćeni oblik od THEY ARE): They’re in outside the building.
  •  
    THREW – past tense of throw (prošlo vreme od glagola  THROW): She threw the ball. Peter caught it.
  •  
    THOUGH – however; nevertheless (mada, međutim): He’s very fit though he is 50 years old.
  •  
    TOO – also, or excessively (takođe, previše): He drank too many screwdrivers and was unable to drive home.
    TWO – a number (dva): Only two people didn’t appear at the meeting.

    WHICH – pronoun, replacing a singular or plural thing(s); not used to refer to persons (zamenica, odnosi se na predmete, životinje i apstraktne imenice): Which part of the book is the most interesting?
    THAT – used to refer to things or a group or class of people (odnosi se na stvari ili na grupu ljudi): I lost the pen that was on my table.
  •  
    WHOM – used as an object (ima funkciju objekta): Whom did Sarah say all of those things?
